What is Betaglot?

BETAGLOT is a language which describes the experience of athletes while they perform in sports which have no direct opposition. It can either be a solo sport or one where athletes work as a team.

Some of the sports which BETAGLOT can describe are:

  • Climbing
  • Skiing
    • Aerial Skiing
    • Freestyle Skiing
    • Park Skiing
    • Slalom Skiing
  • Skateboarding
  • Gymnastics
    • Artistic Gymnastics
    • Aerobic Gymnastics
    • Trampoline Gymnastics
  • Freestyle Kayaking
  • Diving

In all of these sports, athletes must perform specific Aktions. These Aktions are known by various names among the different sports.

In Skiing and Skateboarding you would call an Aktion a "trick" or "maneuver", while in Gymnastics you'd say "element".

The similarity between all Aktions is that they are performed and judged based on the Execution, Difficulty.

For the sake of simplicity, let's focus on the sport from where BETAGLOT originated, Climbing

🙋‍♀️ Why does "Betaglot" sound like it's Ancient Greek?

RosettaStone

The people who designed the Rosetta Stone were polyglots.

"Beta" comes from the

🙋‍♀️ What's with the weird way that Aktion is spelled?

You will notice that some of the spellings that BETAGLOT uses are not English, this is because whenever possible I have tried to use names which are composed of a hybrid between Latin and Greek. This naming convention is designed to fit together with the languages of Biology, Physics, Geology, Philosophy and Psychology, which are all based in Latin or Greek.

  • Homo Sapien, Sodium Chloride, Glacier, Psychoanalysis, Bacteria, Biceps Brachii, Flexion, Pandemic, Echo

The purpose of changing the spelling is to enable people from various languages to be able use the names without translation, to make it easier to share and communicate globally. To ensure that the names are easy to pronounce BETAGLOT uses the letter "K" instead of "C" when relevant and also omits silent letters, like "H".

For example,

Christopher Duncan ---> Kristofer Dunkan

  • "Ch" ---> K
  • "ph" ---> f
  • "Duncan" ---> "Dunkan"

Another example which you have already seen is,

Action ---> Aktion

If you speak English, French, Spanish or Portugese, then it should be possible for you to pronounce every name in BETAGLOT

What are the parts of BETAGLOT?

Betaglot-Logo

As you can see in the BETAGLOT logo, there are six parts. Each part has its own color and symbol associated with it

Each category represents a different component of an athlete's experience

LABOR

LABOR is the goal or purpose of an experience.

In climbing LABOR is experienced as the competition, the route, the other competitors, the time limit, the tools you use, the clothes you wear and any other rules or regulations.

A simple example of an Aktion is reaching. When you reach for something there is an intrinsic goal, to actually get to and establish a grip on a hold.

A more complex element of LABOR is a route. The goal of a route is to get to the top of it, or at least get to the Zone Hold in bouldering.

Here are some more Aktions
  • Going throught a Gate in Slalom Skiing, and Kayaking
  • Reaching with your foot or hand or hip
  • Performing a backflip
  • Performing a dyno
  • Heel Hook, Toe Hook
  • Falling
  • Rolling your kayak
  • Jumping off a ski jump
  • Grinding on a rail
  • Performing an Ollie
  • Performing a Handstand
  • Gripping a Sloper
  • Crimping an Edge
  • Mobility

SOMA

Every person has a different body. The category 🔷SOMA (which is just greek for "body") describes the body part used to perform the Aktion and the specific properties are the body part and body in general.

Everyone is unique, the length of your arms, BMI, total body height, age, ape index etc. all affect the way that an athlete performs an Aktion.

You can perform the same Aktion with a different body part. You can Reach with your Arm or Reach with your Leg

MOTOR

To actually move through time and space you require 🟠MOTOR. This category represents your experience of motion in Time. MOTOR includes all of Kinematic Physics (motion, speed, acceleration, time) and Dynamics Physics (force, velocity, momentum, inertia). The person who's work best represents what MOTOR is all about is Isaac Newton.

ANIMA

The most fundamental of all the categories is 💜ANIMA (which was named "Psyche" for about a year during earlier development, but it seemed too difficult for kids to pronounce and it's unfortunatley common for people to have a negative association with words like "Psychology", "Psychiatrists").

ANIMA can be translated as "soul". Unlike the other categories ANIMA is mostly not visible from a third person point of view. The foundation of ANIMA and all other categories is Awareness, also called consciousness . Awareness is where "you" are, it's where your thoughts and sensations occur. ANIMA is not logical, it is emotional, inuitive, can be instinctual and is usually non-verbal. ANIMA is anything that occurs in your nervous system.

Although your eyes are part of your body, BETAGLOT categorizes them as ANIMA, given that your retina is literally part of your brain.

ANIMA, also known as Consciousness

Elements of ANIMA include:
  • Attention
  • Touch, Sight, Hearing, Taste, Proprioception
  • Emotions, Moods
  • Understanding, Intuition, Recognition
  • Sense of Balance
  • Metacognition
  • Any thought

How do the categories go together?

Big Betum

You've probably noticed that elements just exist by themselves, everything is connected as a combinatory system. The unit of combination is called a 🌈BETUM. The rainbow icon has all the colors of BETAGLOT.

Betums must include at least two elements and are surrounded by square brackets

[LABOR, SOMA, EKOS, VIA MOTOR, ANIMA]

or represented digitally as these boxes

The order in which the elements of each category is listed is fixed

  1. LABOR
  2. 🔷 SOMA
  3. 🟩 EKOS
  4. 🔻 VIA
  5. 🟠 MOTOR
  6. 💜 ANIMA

What is the overall structure of BETAGLOT?

BETAGLOT, just like every language you've ever spoken, is a system.

Languages are composed of words which are fitted into sentences.

For a sentence to make sense the words must be fitted together following grammatical rules

BetaComps

Currently in Climbing there are three types of competitions:

  • Speed Climbing
  • Lead Climbing
  • Bouldering

The goal of all these competitions is to put both hands on the FinishHold while under control.

Climbing, unlike Skateboarding, Gymnastics, Freestyle Skiing and other sports describable by BETAGLOT, currently has no competitions where the athlete is scored on the Difficulty and Execution of their Aktions. The competitions are solely based on how far the athlete achieves along a route and in as little time as possible.

BETAGLOT enables judges to record in writing what the climber is performing on the wall.

In gymnastics, before you start performing your routine, you must give the panel of judges a list of all the Aktions that you will perform.

Each Aktion has been given a specific numerical difficulty value

In gymnastics, they have a rulebook, called a Code Of Points which contains all the

Why did I create BETAGLOT?

Although "Beta" comes from climbing the idea for BETAGLOT originated in the summer of 2015, while planting thousands of trees a day in British Columbia. It started as papers posted to my motel room wall.

PostIt

I had already planted trees for two seasons in the flat swampy land of eastern Canada. When I arrived in the mountains of British Columbia, my roommate had been planting for 15 years and was known as the fastest planter in the company. The faster you plant the more money you make, so effectiveness was on my mind all the time 🤑.

Objectively, what was the difference between me and this master planter?

  • How was he planting more trees than me?
  • How was he physically moving differently than me?
  • What techniques did he know that I didn't?
  • What did he think about while planting?

PlantaBeta

Unlike in sports, where the goal is to perform the most difficult Aktions, when planting trees using PlantaBeta, the goal is to use the easiest Aktions.
